Many may not realize that there is a unique and special history about the services that The Center brings to Littleton and the Denver metro area. The Libby Bortz Assisted Living Center was built in 1994. The Center is a collaborative success for the Littleton community, which cooperated with the Littleton Housing Authority in addressing affordable housing for older adults needing some assistance.
Libby Bortz, a local community member, resident and social worker, was pivotal in recognizing the needs of modest-income adults over the age of 62 to have an affordable assisted living option. In appreciation of her many years of service and volunteering to the Littleton Housing Authority and the community, The Libby Bortz Assisted Living Center was named in her honor.

What is assisted living? Assisted living is the ideal alternative for seniors that need help with activities of daily living, but do not require the high level of medical care typical of nursing homes. Activities of daily living include such things as meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry, medication administration, and bathing. Another nice feature of most assisted living communities is that 24 hour staffing is available, which enhances safety and provides peace of mind for the resident and especially for their families. Access to activities and the company of others is appealing as well. Most assisted living communities are private pay, although some accept Medicaid. However, Medicare never pays for assisted living services. Assisted living communities can provide a broad range of services so it is important to call and/or visit to learn more about the specific services of a particular community.
History of The Libby Bortz Assisted Living Center
In the late 1980's the community and the Littleton Housing Authority recognized that many older adults needed assistance with activities of daily living but not a skilled nursing environment. At that time there were few affordable assisted living locations in the Denver area and none in the Littleton area. In the 80's Littleton Housing Authority had experience with developing senior independent living locations but not the assisted living model.
The Libby Bortz Assisted Living Center is the result of the Littleton Housing Authority, people serving on their board and the community bringing their experience together to create an assisted living center for modest-income older adults. The Center was funded using tax credits, tax exempt bonds and seed money invested by the Littleton Housing Authority. The Center opened in 1994 and today is a well-known affordable assisted living community in the Denver metro area.
Compared to the average cost of assisted living in the Denver Metro Area, which is $3,288* per month, Libby Bortz Assisted Living Center is able to offer affordable rates with high quality services at a fraction of the price. Through a unique tax credit program, the basic rent and services package start at $1,697 per month for an individual and $2,492 per month for couples. Applicants must meet income guidelines. As of 2011 for one person the maximum income is $33,360 annually and for couples the maximum income is $38,100 annually.

The rooms at The Libby Bortz Assisted Living Center are all private, unfurnished studios but include carpet and window coverings. Residents are encouraged to bring their furnishings and mementos to personalize their space. The rooms are approximately 255 square feet and have private bathrooms with step-in showers, though no bathtubs, which can pose a safety hazard. Throughout the Center are beautifully decorated common areas with pleasant and comfortable seating areas. Residents are encouraged to socialize and enjoy not only the common areas, but take advantage of the many organized social and recreation activities that occur daily under the direction of the full time activities director.
